Emotional Intelligence: What It Is and How to Develop It
July 14, 2026 · 6 min read

How many times have you reacted in a way that later left you with that tightness in your chest? Said something on impulse, stayed silent when you wanted to speak, cried in anger without understanding where so much came from? I've been there many times. And it was precisely in those moments that I understood: emotions are not the problem. What changes everything is the relationship we build with them.
Emotional intelligence is exactly that — a more loving and conscious way to relate to what you feel. And I bring this topic with great affection today, because it touches every journey I accompany here at Fox.
After all, what is emotional intelligence?
In a simple way, without cold words: emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize what you feel, understand where it comes from, and choose how to respond — instead of just reacting automatically.
It's not about swallowing emotions. It's not pretending everything is fine. It's not becoming a "controlled" person who is never shaken. It's the opposite of that. It's giving space to what you feel, with warmth, without letting emotion govern you alone.
I like to think of it this way: emotion is like a wave. It comes, it grows, it passes. Emotional intelligence is learning to surf that wave with more lightness — instead of being dragged by it every time.
What are the pillars of emotional intelligence?
This topic was greatly illuminated by the work of psychologist Daniel Goleman, who organized emotional intelligence into several pillars. I see them as gateways to self-knowledge:
- Self-awareness — perceiving what you feel the moment you feel it. Naming the emotion.
- Self-regulation — not being a hostage to impulse. Breathing before reacting.
- Self-motivation — finding within yourself the energy to continue, even when it hurts.
- Empathy — feeling the other, truly listening, seeing beyond appearances.
- Social skills — building healthier relationships, with dialogue and respect.
Notice that everything starts from within. Before understanding others, the journey is to understand yourself. That's why I always say that emotional intelligence and self-knowledge go hand in hand.
Why does developing this change life so much?
When you start to understand yourself better, something beautiful happens: life becomes lighter. Not because problems disappear — they're still there. But because you stop fighting with yourself all the time.
Those who develop this skill usually feel:
- More harmony in relationships, because you communicate what you feel without exploding or staying silent.
- Less burden in the face of daily stress and frustrations.
- More clarity to make decisions aligned with your inner light.
- A firmer self-esteem, built from the inside out.
I've seen women arrive here exhausted from living on autopilot and, little by little, rediscover their own voice. This is healing. Not in a magical sense — but in the sense of returning home to yourself.
How to develop emotional intelligence in daily life?
This is the question I receive most often, so I'll answer you from the heart. Developing emotional intelligence doesn't happen with a magic wand or in a single day. It's a journey — made of small steps repeated with kindness. Here are some that I love:
- Name what you feel. Instead of "I'm feeling bad," try: "I'm scared," "I'm frustrated," "I'm sad." Naming already organizes the chaos within.
- Create a pause between feeling and acting. Take three deep breaths before replying to a message that annoyed you. This interval is where your freedom resides.
- Observe without judging yourself. You are not a "wrong" person for feeling anger or envy. Feeling is human. Judging only increases suffering.
- Cultivate moments of silence. Meditation, conscious breathing, a peaceful tea. Energy reorganizes when we slow down.
- Write about your emotions. A journal is a loving mirror. You see yourself better when you put it on paper.
- Listen to others without rushing to respond. Empathy is trained through listening.
Small gestures, repeated consistently, transform. It's like watering a plant: you don't see it grow instantly, but one day you notice it has bloomed.
And where do holistic therapies fit into this journey?
Here I need to be honest with you, because I respect you too much. The therapies I offer — Reiki, Therapeutic Tarot, Crystal Therapy, mental reprogramming, Personal Development — are paths of support for your well-being and self-knowledge. They do not cure diseases, do not replace medical or psychological care, and will never take the place of a health professional when one is needed.
What these practices do is open space. A welcoming space where you listen to yourself, organize what you feel, and reconnect with your essence.
Mental reprogramming, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), for example, I work with as a tool for self-knowledge and communication — a way for you to perceive the patterns of thought and speech that limit you, and choose new paths. It is not clinical treatment. It's a new lens to see yourself. In fact, it's in this mental reprogramming work that many people realize, in practice, how the Law of Attraction begins with the thoughts we feed every day.
Personal Development walks side by side: it helps you transform awareness into action, to take concrete steps towards who you want to be. And it is precisely in this encounter between understanding yourself and moving forward that emotional intelligence flourishes with greater strength.
Shall we walk this journey together?
If reading this text stirred something within you, perhaps it's a sign that it's time to listen to yourself with more care. You don't have to do it alone.
I would love to welcome you and understand where you are on your journey. No rush, no pressure — just a safe space for you to breathe and reconnect with your inner light. If you feel like it, call me to chat lightly via Fox's WhatsApp. I'll be here with open arms and heart.
With light and warmth,
