The 4 elements in Shamanic Reiki: earth, air, water, and fire
July 23, 2026 · 7 min read

Some days we wake up feeling like something is out of place, right? As if an inner piece is asking for attention, but we're not quite sure which one. It was through Shamanic Reiki that I learned to look at these moments with more lightness — and to understand that we are made of the same matter as the nature around us.
I want to take you with me on this conversation about the four elements. Not as a technical lesson, but as a friend sitting beside you, sharing what I've learned on this journey of self-discovery. Come with me, calmly and with an open heart.
What is Shamanic Reiki and why does it work with the elements?
The Reiki that many people know is, in itself, a beautiful practice of channeling universal energy to promote relaxation and well-being. Shamanic Reiki goes a little further: it draws from the ancestral wisdom of indigenous peoples, who have always seen nature as a teacher and a mirror of our own essence.
In this approach, we work by recognizing that we are part of the whole. The same earth that sustains a tree sustains you. The same water that flows in rivers flows, in the form of emotion, within your chest. It's a loving way to remember that we are not separate from life — we are part of it.
And that's exactly why the 4 elements in Shamanic Reiki gain so much importance. They are like four languages that energy uses to express itself within us.
Before we continue, I want to be honest with you: everything I share here is a support for well-being and self-knowledge. Holistic therapies walk alongside health care — never in place of medical or psychological accompaniment. If you are going through something delicate, please also seek professional support. Taking care of yourself is an act of complete love.
What are the 4 elements in Shamanic Reiki?
Each element carries an energy, an inner quality, and a message. When they are in harmony within us, life flows with more lightness. When one of them is lacking or in excess, we feel it — in our body, emotions, and thoughts.
I'll introduce each one to you with care.
Earth: the element of grounding
Earth is our ground. It represents security, stability, and presence. When the earth element is balanced within you, there's a pleasant feeling of being firm, of belonging, of trusting the path.
When it's scarce, it's common to feel that anxiety of someone with their feet in the air — racing thoughts, difficulty resting, the feeling of having no foundation. Working with earth invites us to slow down, to feel the body, to reconnect with the now.
Small grounding gestures I love:
- Walking barefoot on grass or sand, feeling the contact
- Caring for a plant with presence
- Breathing deeply, imagining roots growing from your feet
Air: the element of mind and clarity
Air is the breath, movement, space. It connects to our thoughts, communication, and creativity. When air flows well, ideas come with clarity, and we can express ourselves truthfully.
When the air is cloudy, mental confusion, excessive worry, and that restless mind emerge. Working with this element is like opening a window to air out the soul — making space for the new, letting go of what no longer fits.
Conscious breathing is the most beautiful gateway to the air element. Inhaling acceptance, exhaling weight. Simple as that, and yet transformative.
Water: the element of emotions
Water is pure sensitivity. It represents emotions, feelings, intuition, and the ability to flow. Where there is balanced water, there is empathy, tenderness, and that pleasant surrender of one who allows themselves to feel.
But water can also overflow or stagnate. Suppressed emotions, unshed tears, stored resentments — all of this calls for movement. The water element teaches us that feeling is not weakness: it is life flowing freely within us.
Honoring water means allowing yourself to cry when needed, resting near the sea or taking a long bath, and treating your own emotions with the same delicacy you would offer a beloved child.
Fire: the element of vital force
And then we have fire — warmth, passion, courage, and will. It is our creative impulse, the flame that moves us, the energy that warms encounters and ignites dreams.
When the fire is low, we feel discouragement, lack of purpose, that apathy of someone who has lost their sparkle. When it's in excess, it turns into irritation and impatience. The balance of fire is one of the most beautiful keys to reconnecting with your inner light.
Lighting a candle with intention, moving, dancing, creating something with your hands — these are simple ways to rekindle this precious energy.
How do the 4 elements connect to our balance?
The secret to all of this, my dear, lies in harmony. No element is better than another. They dance together within us, just as the seasons dance in nature.
In a Shamanic Reiki session, I perceive, with sensitivity and listening, which element is asking for attention. Sometimes it's earth, needing grounding. Sometimes it's water, with stored emotions. The work is gentle, unhurried — an invitation to rebalance what was misaligned.
There is no right or wrong on this journey. There is self-listening. And when we learn to recognize these elements in our daily lives, we gain a beautiful compass to care for ourselves every day.
Shall we take care of your elements together?
If something within you stirred while reading this, perhaps it's a gentle call from your inner light asking for attention. And that's perfectly fine — this is the beginning of every healing journey.
If you feel like experiencing a rebalancing through Shamanic Reiki with me, it would be an honor to welcome you. No rush, no pressure — just a safe space for you to reconnect with your essence. Just call me so we can chat with care via WhatsApp.
With light and warmth,
