How to have more self-love: a gentle guide for women

You take care of the house. You take care of the people you love. You take care of work, deadlines, and the details no one else notices. And when the end of the day arrives, what's left is you — tired, on autopilot, not really knowing when was the last time you looked at yourself with affection.

If this touched something deep inside you, take a deep breath. You are in the right place.

Here in my space, I talk to many women like this. Strong, dedicated women who give everything they have — and who learned, at some point in life, that taking care of themselves would be selfish. It isn't. Self-love is not a luxury or vanity. It is the foundation of everything.

I want to invite you to a gentle conversation about this. No pressure. No magic formula. Just an honest path for you to rediscover your own inner light.

How to have more self-love?

The first thing I need to tell you with complete honesty: self-love doesn't happen overnight. It's a journey, not a switch you turn on.

But there are gentle paths that help you start today. Take a look:

  • Notice how you speak to yourself. We tend to be hard on ourselves in a way we would never be with a friend. When the thought "I can't handle this" comes up, ask yourself: would I say this to someone I love? If the answer is no, then don't say it to yourself either.
  • Celebrate the small things. You don't need a major achievement to feel proud. Got out of bed on a heavy day? Set a boundary that took courage? That's already a victory. Write down these small victories in a little notebook — it will be beautiful to read later.
  • Care for your body with gentleness. Sleep well, drink water, take a short walk, take deep breaths. Not as an obligation, but as a loving care you give yourself. A cared-for body and a welcomed mind go hand in hand.
  • Set aside a little time just for yourself. Five minutes of silence. A cup of tea. A conscious breath. This moment doesn't steal anything from anyone — it brings you back to yourself.

Small gestures, repeated consistently, change more than big promises we can't keep. Go lightly.

How to boost self-esteem?

Self-love and self-esteem walk side by side. Self-love is the feeling of accepting yourself as you are. Self-esteem is how much you recognize your own worth. When one flourishes, the other comes along.

And do you know what feeds self-esteem the most? The way you see yourself on the inside.

Here are some practices I usually share in my sessions:

  • Swap self-criticism for self-compassion. Instead of "I failed," try "I am learning." It seems small, but this shift in words reorganizes the energy you carry about yourself.
  • Surround yourself with people who make you feel good. Pay attention to who fills you up and who drains you. You deserve to be close to those who see your light.
  • Make peace with the mirror. You don't need to love every detail all at once. Start with gratitude: thank your body for everything it allows you to experience.
  • Welcome your emotions without judgment. Feeling fear, sadness, or exhaustion doesn't make you weak. It makes you human. When you stop fighting what you feel, there is room for healing.

Self-esteem isn't achieved all at once. It's built, day after day, through small choices of kindness toward yourself.

Why do women have lower self-esteem?

This question deserves gentle care — because the answer is not your fault.

Many of us grew up hearing that we needed to please, serve, handle everything, and still smile. We learned to put others' needs always ahead of our own. And when your whole life revolves around taking care of everyone, very little room is left to look at yourself.

There's also the pressure coming from outside — about your body, motherhood, career, way of being. There are so many voices telling you how you "should" be that sometimes your own voice gets drowned out.

Add to that the limiting beliefs we carry without even noticing. Phrases like "I'm not enough," "I need to do everything right," "I can't disappoint anyone." They settle in early and become almost absolute truths. But they aren't. They are just old stories you learned — and stories can be rewritten.

Understanding where this shaken self-esteem comes from isn't so you play the victim. It's so you can free yourself. When we see the root, it becomes easier to gently loosen the knot.

Where to start?

If you've made it this far, you've already started. Truly. Recognizing that you deserve to take care of yourself is already the first step on the journey.

From here, I invite you to take it slowly:

1. Look at where you are today — without judgment, just with honesty and warmth.

2. Choose one small gesture of self-love a day. Just one. It could be a conscious breath, a "no" that protects your energy, a moment of silence.

3. Practice gratitude. Before sleeping, remember three good things from your day. This simple habit reshapes how you look at life.

4. Allow yourself to receive support. You don't have to carry everything alone. Walking with company makes the journey lighter.

And here is an honest truth that is part of my commitment to you: holistic therapies — like Reiki, Therapeutic Tarot, or a Personal Development process — are beautiful ways to support your well-being and self-knowledge. They embrace you, create room for reflection, and help you rediscover your inner light.

But they do not replace medical or psychological care. If you are experiencing deeper suffering, anxiety, or sadness that won't go away, seeking a healthcare professional is not weakness — it is one of the greatest acts of self-love there is. And yes, you can combine both paths. They complement each other beautifully.

Self-love is not a destination, it is a path. And every path becomes sweeter when we allow ourselves to walk it with gentleness.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to develop self-love?

There is no set timeframe — it's a lifelong journey, with progress and setbacks. What matters is not the speed, but consistency and gentleness with yourself along the way.

Is self-love the same thing as selfishness?

No. Selfishness is taking care of yourself while ignoring others. Self-love is filling your own cup so you can overflow in a healthy way. When you take care of yourself, you take better care of those you love too.

Do holistic therapies cure low self-esteem?

They don't cure it, and anyone who promises you a magical cure is not being honest. What holistic therapies offer is warmth, self-knowledge, and support on your wellness journey — always as a complement, never as a substitute for medical or psychological care when it is needed.

Where do I start if I feel lost?

Start with the simplest thing: one loving gesture toward yourself a day and an honest look at how you feel. If you'd like to walk with company, I'm here to support you on this journey with lightness.
