How to begin your self-knowledge journey

There are days when we wake up with that strange feeling, aren't there? Everything seems fine on the outside, but inside there's an emptiness, a restlessness, a question that won't go away: *"is this all there is?"*.

If you're here reading this, I truly believe in my heart that it wasn't by chance. Some part of you is already asking for space. And the affectionate name for this calling is self-knowledge.

I'm Cris, a holistic therapist and mentor, and over the last few years I've accompanied many women taking this first step, almost always with a heavy heart, thinking they needed to have everything figured out before starting. So let me tell you right off the bat, with all the lightness in the world: you don't need to be ready to start. You just need to start.

In this post, I want to walk with you through the first steps of this journey. No magic formula, no rush, no judgment. Just truth and welcoming warmth.

What is self-knowledge, really?

Before any technique, let's agree on the meaning of this word that has become so trendy.

Self-knowledge isn't about becoming a "perfect" person or discovering a grand purpose overnight. It's something much simpler and much deeper at the same time: it's the courage to find yourself again.

It's learning to listen to your thoughts without drowning in them. It's recognizing your emotions by name. It's understanding why certain situations throw you off balance and others fill you with inner light. It's coming back home, and that home is you.

I like to say that self-knowledge is less about *discovering* who you are, and more about *remembering*. Because this wisdom has always been right inside you. The journey is just the way back to it.

Where to start with self-knowledge in practice?

This is the question I get asked the most. And my answer might surprise you with its simplicity. It starts by observing.

Before changing anything, we need to see. And seeing yourself requires a pause, something rare in the busy days we live in. So here are the first steps I always suggest with lots of care:

  • Set your intention. Ask yourself with honesty: *why do I want to know myself better right now?* Intention is the compass of the journey. It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be sincere.
  • Start observing yourself without judgment. Throughout the day, notice your thoughts, your reactions, what brings you joy, and what bothers you. You're not fixing yourself. You're getting to know yourself.
  • Name your emotions. Instead of "I feel bad", try: *I'm afraid*, *I'm tired*, *I miss someone*. Naming what we feel is already an act of healing.
  • Create a small ritual. Five minutes of silence in the morning, conscious breathing, a cup of tea in peace. The inner journey needs space to happen.

Notice that none of these steps require money, extra time, or technical knowledge. It only requires presence. And presence, my dear, is the soil where all transformation is born.

What tools help on this journey?

Along the way, some practices act as allies, small helping hands that support you when looking within gets intense. There is no single recipe, and part of the beauty is precisely discovering what resonates with your energy.

Some that I usually recommend with affection:

  • Reflective writing (journaling). Putting what you feel onto paper unclutters your mind and organizes your heart. One page a day already makes a difference.
  • Meditation and breathing. You don't need to empty your mind, okay? Just bring your attention back to your breath whenever it wanders. It's a practice of self-affection.
  • Holistic therapies as support. Shamanic Reiki, Therapeutic Tarot, and Crystal Healing can be beautiful mirrors on this journey, nurturing tools that help you look inside with more lightness and harmony.

Here I need to be very honest with you, because true nurturing is also responsibility: holistic therapies are a support for your well-being, and do not replace medical or psychological care. If you are facing deep emotional pain, intense anxiety, or any health issue, seeking a health professional is an act of self-love, and holistic therapy walks alongside that, never in its place.

And mental reprogramming, how does it fit into this story?

I will touch on this topic gently, because it is precious and often misunderstood.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is, within Personal Development work, a tool for self-knowledge and communication. It helps you notice the patterns of your inner language, that little voice repeating "I can't handle it", "I don't deserve it", and rewrite those stories with more awareness and kindness.

It's about understanding how you communicate with yourself and with the world. It's about bringing more clarity to your goals and more lightness to your inner dialogue.

I want to be transparent: mental reprogramming, in my work, is not a clinical treatment for anxiety, phobias, or any health condition. It is a tool for personal development and self-knowledge. For clinical matters, care always comes from mental health professionals.

How long does it take to know yourself?

I'm going to tell you a liberating secret: the journey of self-knowledge has no finish line.

And that's not bad news, it's a relief. It means you're not late, you're not doing it wrong, and you don't need to "finish" anything. We get to know ourselves a little bit more with each season of life, because we also change all the time.

So take a deep breath and swap the question *"when will I get there?"* for *"what small step can I take today?"*. Lightness lives in that shift. Self-knowledge is a walk, and each step is already the destination.

How about taking the first step together?

If reading this far you felt a little calling in your chest, trust it. That calling is your inner light asking for space to shine.

I would love to walk with you on this journey, at your own pace, with warmth and without any pressure. If you want to talk, ask questions, or simply understand how my work can support you right now, just reach out warmly.
