Coaching or Therapy? Understand the Difference
July 9, 2026 · 6 min read

I get this question almost every week, my dear. "Cris, do I need therapy or coaching? Which one is for me?" And honestly, I love when someone asks me this, because it's already a sign that you're listening to yourself. You've noticed that something within you is asking for attention, for care, for movement. And that's already a beautiful gesture of self-love.
The truth is, there's a lot of confusion about what coaching is and what therapy is. The words become trendy, everyone uses them, and in the end, no one really knows what each path offers. So take a deep breath with me, prepare some tea, and let's talk about this with lightness and honesty. No complicated jargon. Like two friends sitting on the sofa.
So, what exactly is coaching?
Coaching is a process focused on the present and the future. It looks at where you are now and where you want to go. It's a work of clarity, direction, and action.
Imagine you're in a boat in the middle of a lake. You feel like you want to reach a shore, but you don't know which one, or how to row there. Mentoring helps you see the destination, understand what's holding you back today, and take the first concrete steps towards your goals.
In Mentoring, I work a lot with questions. I don't come with ready-made answers, because the answers already reside within you. My role is to ask the right questions so that your own inner light illuminates the path. It's an invitation to self-knowledge, self-responsibility, and conscious transformation.
This work is usually good for those who want to:
- Gain clarity on personal or professional goals
- Break free from a moment of stagnation or indecision
- Develop new and healthier habits
- Regain confidence and a sense of agency in their own life
- Align what they feel, what they think, and what they do
And what is therapy, really?
Here I need to be very honest with you, because honesty is care.
When we talk about therapy in the clinical sense, we are talking about psychotherapy — a work that looks at your history, your deepest emotional pains, traumas, disorders, and issues of your inner life. And this work needs to be conducted by a professional with a degree in Psychology, or accompanied by a psychiatrist when there is a medical necessity.
This is not a bureaucratic detail; it's diligence. Psychotherapy treats psychological suffering, and that is serious business, deserving of the right professional.
I am a holistic therapist. I work with Shamanic Reiki, Therapeutic Tarot, Crystal Therapy, mental reprogramming, and Personal Development — practices that care for your energy, your emotional balance, and your well-being. But I make a point of making this very clear, with all the affection in the world: holistic therapies are a support for your well-being journey. They do not replace medical or psychological care, and they do not cure diseases. Anyone who promises you a cure is misleading you, and that doesn't align with the light I seek to offer.
Coaching or Therapy: What's the Difference in Practice?
I'll summarize it in a simple way for you to keep in your heart:
- Therapy (psychotherapy) looks more at the past and present, to understand the roots of what you feel. It cares for pain, trauma, emotional health. It is done by a psychologist.
- Coaching looks at the present and future, to build paths and achieve goals. It cares for movement, clarity, action.
- Holistic therapies (like Reiki and Therapeutic Tarot) care for your energy and your inner balance, like a hug that embraces you as you walk.
One is not better than the other. They are different natures of care. And, you know what? Many times they walk together. I know so many women who do psychotherapy and, at the same time, seek Mentoring or a Reiki session to bring lightness and harmony to the process. Taking care of yourself doesn't have to be an "either/or" choice. It can be a blossoming of several loving hands.
How do I know which path is mine?
I'm going to give you an inner listening exercise, because no one knows better than you what your soul needs.
If you are feeling a deep emotional pain, persistent anguish, symptoms that affect your daily life, heavy memories, signs of anxiety or depression — please, seek a psychologist. This is the right care, and seeking professional help is an act of courage and self-love.
If you are feeling lost, without direction, stagnant, wanting to take a new step but not knowing where to start, wanting to reconnect with your dreams and your strength — Mentoring can be a helping hand that assists you in rowing.
And if you feel you need comfort, energetic balance, a space for pause and reconnection with your inner light, holistic therapies can be that embrace that complements your journey.
There is no wrong choice when it comes from care. The important thing is to allow yourself to be cared for.
How about we take this step together?
If you've made it this far, it's because something within you is asking for care, dear. And I want you to know: you don't have to walk alone on this journey of self-discovery and inner healing.
If you still have any doubts about which path suits your current moment, call me to chat. No commitment, no pressure — just two people listening to each other with care to understand how I can support your search for more lightness and harmony.
