Shamanic Reiki vs Traditional Reiki: Which One Is for You?
June 23, 2026 · 8 min read

Hi, it's so good to see you here.
If you've landed on this post, it's very likely that something inside you is asking for a pause. A breath of fresh air. A gentler way to care for your energy. And maybe, in the middle of this search, you've stumbled upon two names that sound similar, but aren't the same: traditional Reiki and Shamanic Reiki.
I'm Cris, a holistic therapist, and here in my space I work with Reiki energy every day. So take a deep breath with me, and I'll explain the difference between the two calmly, just as I would to a friend sitting beside me over a cup of tea.
And let me reassure you about one thing right away: there is no wrong choice here. There is only the choice that makes the most sense for this moment in your journey. Let's find out together which one it is.
What is the difference between shamanic and traditional Reiki?
Before making any comparison, let's go back to the beginning.
Reiki is a therapy of Japanese origin, rediscovered by Mikao Usui back in the 1920s. The word comes from the combination of "Rei" (universal energy) and "Ki" (vital energy). In practice, it's an energetic healing through the laying on of hands: I channel universal energy and direct it to your energy centers, helping your body and mind return to balance.
This is traditional Reiki. Gentle, silent, direct. It works with specific symbols to channel energy, and the focus is usually relief: releasing tension, calming the mind, easing anxiety, sleeping better. It's like a helping hand coming to soothe you.
Shamanic Reiki starts from the same principle: the same laying on of hands, the same universal energy. But it adds to all of this the ancestral wisdom of shamanic traditions. Here, we don't just work with symbols — we invite nature into the session.
To help you visualize the difference, it goes like this:
- In traditional Reiki: hands, silence, classic symbols, and a gentle focus on relieving what feels heavy.
- In Shamanic Reiki: all of that, plus the strength of the four elements, ancestral symbols, and sometimes sounds like drums, rattles, chants, smudging, and crystals to amplify the energy.
Another important difference is depth. Traditional Reiki often seeks more immediate relief. Shamanic Reiki tends to go deeper: it invites you on an inner journey, a reconnection with your inner light, with your connection to nature and to your true self.
Neither is better than the other. They are different paths to the same place: your balance.
What are the 4 elements?
This is the part that enchants people the most when they come to me curious about Shamanic Reiki. And it makes total sense, because the four elements are the heart of this practice.
Shamanic philosophy understands something truly beautiful: that you are not separate from nature. You are part of it. And nature manifests through four forces that also live inside you — Earth, Water, Fire, and Air.
Let me introduce each one to you the way I feel them:
- Earth — it is your ground, your stability, the feeling of being safe and rooted. When Earth is out of balance, we feel lost, lacking a firm footing.
- Water — it is your emotions, your ability to flow, to feel, to surrender. When Water gets blocked, emotions build up behind a dam.
- Fire — it is your passion, your willpower, the courage to act. When Fire burns out, discouragement sets in. When it gets out of control, irritability arises.
- Air — it is your thoughts, mental clarity, your breath. When Air is confused, the mind won't stop spinning.
In a Shamanic Reiki session, we work to rebalance these four elements within you. It's like tuning an instrument: when every string is in place, the music sounds beautiful again. That is the invitation — restoring harmony between what you feel, what you think, and who you are.
Is Shamanic Reiki stronger?
This is one of the questions I get asked the most. And I love answering it honestly, because I believe honesty is the first step of any true healing.
"Stronger" might not be the most exact word. Shamanic Reiki isn't a "boosted" version of traditional Reiki. It is broader, more ritualistic, more immersive. By bringing in the elements, sounds, and ancestral symbols, many people experience it as something deeper and more engaging.
But "deep" isn't the same for everyone. Some people feel heat, tingling, a wave of emotion. Some people simply relax so deeply that they almost fall asleep. And there are those who don't feel anything spectacular at the time — and yet leave feeling lighter, calmer, more whole. All of this is normal and valid.
And here I need to be very transparent with you, with all my love: Reiki, whether traditional or shamanic, is a supportive therapy for your well-being. It does not cure diseases, it does not perform miracles, and it does not replace medical or psychological care you might need. Reiki walks alongside your treatment, like a gentle embrace — never in place of it.
In fact, in 2017 Reiki became part of the Integrative and Complementary Practices offered by SUS, recognized precisely as this kind of complementary support. That is exactly how I offer it here: as care that adds value, welcomes you, and helps you breathe again.
Which one to choose?
We've reached the question that probably brought you here. And the most honest answer is: it depends on what your heart is asking for right now.
Let me help you feel into this:
Traditional Reiki might be for you if:
- You seek simplicity, lightness, and tranquility.
- You want to ease anxiety, stress, or insomnia in a gentle way.
- You are just starting out and want a gentle doorway into energy healing.
- You prefer a quieter, more introspective experience.
Shamanic Reiki might be for you if:
- You feel a calling to connect deeper with your spirituality.
- You feel an affinity with nature, the elements, and ancestral rituals.
- You seek not just relief, but a journey of self-knowledge and transformation.
- You want a more immersive experience, with more layers and symbolism.
And look, if you read both and thought "I want both" — that's completely okay too. Our journey isn't linear. There are moments for simplicity and moments for depth.
The most important thing isn't getting it right on the first try. It's choosing the path you feel most drawn to, most comfortable with. Energy responds best when we approach it with an open heart, without expectations.
And if you're still in doubt, I can help you feel which one aligns best with your current moment. That's what I'm here for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shamanic Reiki work at a distance, online?
Yes. Since Reiki works with energy, and energy knows no limits of space, an online session works just like an in-person one. We connect, you get comfortable in your own cozy spot, and I channel the energy to you. Many people who have experienced both formats feel the exact same warmth and care.
How long does a session last and how does it happen?
It usually lasts about an hour (Shamanic Reiki might go a little longer because of the rituals). We start with a brief chat so I can understand your current moment and your intentions. Then you lie down comfortably, fully clothed, and simply allow yourself to receive. No effort, nothing to do — just relax.
Do I need to believe in it for it to work?
You don't need to "believe in anything" to get started. You just need to be open to experiencing it. Reiki is a felt experience, not a mandatory belief. Come with curiosity and lightness, and the energy will guide the rest.
Does Reiki replace my medical treatment or therapy?
No, and this is very important. Reiki is a complementary care practice, a support for your well-being. It walks alongside your medical or psychological care, never in place of it. Keep taking care of your health with the professionals you already trust — Reiki comes to complement that care.
