Tarot and Shadow Work: Facing Your Shadow with the Cards

There's a part of us we prefer not to look at. You know that way of reacting that shames you? The envy that appears uninvited? The jealousy, the anger, that sadness you sweep under the rug because "it's not pretty to feel that"? Well, that part has a name. We call it the shadow.

And I'm going to tell you something I took a long time to understand on my own journey: the shadow is not your enemy. It's just a part of you that stayed in the dark, waiting to be looked at with kindness. And Tarot, when used with intention, can be one of the gentlest hands to help you light that light.

Sit here with me, I want to explain this to you gently.

What is shadow work, after all?

Shadow work is a concept that comes from Carl Jung's psychology. He realized that everyone carries aspects of their own personality that have been repressed, denied, or forgotten. Usually because, at some point, they didn't fit into what was expected of us: family, society, the rules of "right and wrong."

The beautiful detail is that the shadow isn't just what's ugly in us. Sometimes it hides talents, legitimate desires, and creative impulses that we learned to silence too early. That desire to sing you kept hidden. The ambition they told you was "too much for a woman." The sensitivity they called weakness.

Working with the shadow isn't about trying to eliminate these parts. It's about putting them in their rightful place. It's about learning to live with yourself instead of fighting against yourself. For me, that's true self-knowledge.

How does Tarot help with shadow work?

When I open the cards for this type of work, they don't function like a crystal ball that predicts the future. They function as a mirror.

Tarot images are full of symbols that speak directly to our unconscious. There are different decks, like the Rider Waite Tarot and the Marseille Tarot, and each brings its own visual language. When a card appears, it often touches exactly on what we were avoiding seeing. Not because the card has magical power to judge you, but because it offers you a language to name what was still unnamed within you.

Tarot helps mainly in three ways:

  • Gives form to what is confusing. That tangled feeling gains an image, an archetype, a story.
  • Creates safe distance. It's easier to look at a card and say "this is me" than to face the pain in your chest.
  • Opens conversation, not verdict. The card doesn't decide anything for you. It just asks: "how about we look at this together?"

Cards that often appear in this work are those many people fear: the Moon, the Devil, the Tower, Death. But none of them are a sentence. The Moon speaks of fears and illusions. The Devil, of attachments and what binds us. The Tower, of necessary ruptures. Death, of cycles that need to end for a new one to begin. They are teachers, not executioners.

What questions to ask in a shadow reading?

Here lies the secret. In shadow work, we don't ask "what will happen to me?". We ask questions that invite reflection, not prediction.

Some questions I love to propose in a reading:

  • What emotion have I been avoiding feeling?
  • What part of me do I hide from others and even from myself?
  • What truth am I ready to face?
  • What is this part of me trying to protect me from?
  • How can I embrace this with more lightness?

Notice that none of these questions expect an external answer. All invite you inward. And it's in this gentle dive, without rush or pressure, that healing begins to happen.

Can I do shadow work with Tarot alone?

Yes, you can. And I even encourage you to start observing yourself alone, with a deck and a notebook beside you. It doesn't matter if it's a Rider Waite, a Marseille, or the deck that most enchanted you on the shelf: draw a card, breathe, write down what it awakened. There's no need for a "right" answer. What matters is what moves within you.

But I'm going to be honest with you, because honesty is the least I owe you: facing the shadow can stir deep waters. Sometimes an old pain, a memory, a weight comes to the surface that asks for more than a deck can handle alone.

That's why I always say: holistic therapies, including Tarot, are a support for your well-being and self-knowledge. They walk alongside you with warmth. But they do not replace medical or psychological care. If your shadow brings up denser issues, seeking a psychologist is not weakness. It's self-love. And one thing doesn't cancel out the other: Tarot can give you the language, therapy can give you clinical care, and together they build a complete journey.

And when does mental reprogramming enter this journey?

Many people ask me how Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) connects with this work. I like to explain it this way: mental reprogramming, in my work, is a tool for self-knowledge and communication, with myself and with the world.

It helps me notice the language and thought patterns I repeat automatically. That "I never can," that "this isn't for me." When we illuminate the shadow with Tarot and perceive these patterns with mental reprogramming, we begin to rewrite the way we speak to ourselves. With more kindness, with more truth. It's also through this that the Law of Attraction makes sense to me: what we cultivate within ends up echoing in what we attract into life.

It's important to make clear, with all affection: mental reprogramming here is not clinical treatment for anything. It's a self-knowledge resource that complements your care, never replaces therapy or medicine.

Want to walk this journey with company?

Facing your own shadow is an act of courage and self-love. And you don't have to do it alone. If something here touched you, if there's a part of you asking to be looked at with more light, I would love to accompany you on this journey, at your own pace and with all the warmth you deserve.
